Martial Arts University is officially recognized by the Southeastern United States Kendo Federation, a regional organization affiliated with the All United States Kendo Federation.

Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei Jodo, commonly known as Seitei Jodo, is a modern Japanese martial art focused on the practice of the jo. The style was developed under the guidance of the All Japan Kendo Federation (Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei) in the 1960s to preserve and standardize the ancient techniques of the jo for modern practice. It is deeply rooted in the historical art of Shinto Muso-ryu Jojutsu, an older tradition of jo combat.

Seitei Jodo is known for its emphasis on precision, timing, and mental discipline, combining traditional techniques with a structured, accessible format. It is practiced worldwide by martial artists seeking to deepen their understanding of Japanese weapon-based martial arts.

    What is Seitei Jodo?

Seitei Jodo is the standardized form of jodo, the Japanese art of the short staff (jo, about 128 cm). Practitioners use the jo to defend against an opponent armed with a sword.

The curriculum consists of twelve paired kata, practiced with a partner holding a wooden sword (bokken), and a set of basic techniques (kihon).

    History and lineage

Seitei Jodo is derived from Shinto Muso-Ryu, a classical school traditionally attributed to Muso Gonnosuke in the early seventeenth century.

In 1968 the All Japan Kendo Federation created Seitei Jodo so the art could be taught and graded in a consistent way, and it is now practiced in kendo federations around the world.

    What a class looks like

Class begins with formal etiquette, followed by solo and paired kihon. Most of the session is spent practicing the twelve kata with a partner, focusing on correct distance (maai), timing and posture.

    Who it's for

Seitei Jodo is ideal for people who enjoy precision and calm focus, for kendo and iaido practitioners, and for those who want a traditional art that can be practiced at any age.
